When surfers head out to the sea they are sometimes unaware of some unwritten rules which apply to the sport. Before a surfer puts on their summer or bodyglove wetsuit, it is a good idea to become familiar with the etiquette.
First of all, surfers should be careful to observe the right of way. The surfer closest to the breaking wave has priority, and if they miss it, the priority changes to the next closest surfer and so on. If the wave is peaked from both ends then the surfers should communicate with each other to ensure that two surfers won’t be attempting to surf the same wave.
People will undoubtedly get annoyed if a fellow surfer tries to drop in, cutting in front of others who are already on their feet. Keeping an eye out for who have the right of way should prevent this from happening.
Surfers should not snake and constantly attempt to paddle past other surfers to get into the inside position, it is not only unfair on other surfers, but also rude.
Similarly, surfers should not paddle further out to try to hog waves, trying to ride a wave before it reaches the line-up is likely to annoy people and provoke them to drop in on waves.
If visiting an unfamiliar spot, a surfer is more likely to gain respect from locals if he or she treats them with friendliness and respect. It is also a good idea to learn the correct way to paddle into a line-up to ensure that the paths of other surfers are not crossed.
When choosing an area to surf, an individual should not select a spot which is above their ability. This will only irritate other surfers and present a potential hazard to them.
If another surfer gets into trouble they should be helped as quickly as possible. Surfing can be a dangerous sport, so participants should try their best to watch out for one another.
If the rules of etiquette are broken, the surfer should apologise to the people around them. Even though it may not resolve the incident, good manners go a long way to improve a situation.
Finally, the beach should always be kept in the best condition possible. No graffiti, vandalism, or litter should be left on the beach or its surroundings.
Surfing can be hugely rewarding and a lot of fun, surfers should make the most of their time in water and enjoy themselves.
